Knowledgebase:
Changes to our DNS Infrastructure
Posted by Nitesh K, Last modified by Alisha D on 05 August 2015 08:27:56 PM

We are now kickstarting the process of moving the dns IP addresses to our own subnets. This gives us the ability to use Neustar for DDOS mitigation whenever required ensuring that we can withstand any attack and eliminate Single point of failure with Softlayer. The move helps us to use Neustar’s Anycast’d DDOS mitigation system to withstand high volumes.

These changes that we are about to implement are aimed at improving our DNS capability, ensuring better reliability for all dependent services and keeping us better prepared  in wake of any ddos attack.

Changes

For partially branded name servers -
If you're using only the partially branded name servers, such as .earth.orderbox-dns.com, we shall make all the necessary changes automatically and you will benefit from the enhanced protection.

For fully branded name servers -
If you're using fully branded name servers of the type ns1.newdnsip.com, the IP addresses for these must be updated for the changes to take effect.

If the Domain name of your fully branded NS is registered with us :
If you're using fully branded name servers and manage child name servers and dns via our platform, you do not have to do anything - we shall make all the necessary changes.

If the Domain name of your fully branded NS is not registered with us:
If the domain is not registered with us, you need to make sure that you get in touch with your domain registration provider and get those 16 Child Name Servers updated at their end as detailed below.

1. Update all the child name server entries, so that each name server uses the corresponding new IP addresses listed in the table following the images. (The panel is likely to look similar to the images below)

2. Using the DNS management services for the parent domain of your child name servers, update the A records for each child name server to use the new IP addresses. (The panel is likely to look similar to the below image)

Note :

In case you are using any other nameservers for the domain name “newdnsip.com”, you need to add/update those 16 A records in the DNS zone of the nameservers for that domain name.

How soon must you do this?

The new IP addresses are already functional, so you can make the changes immediately. The old IP addresses will continue to function till the 20th of August. Kindly note Neustar’s Anycast’d DDOS mitigation system will only be functional with the new IP addresses and hence we urge you to make these changes at the earliest.

If you have any doubts or questions about this process, please contact our support team.
